Education
In 2019, international education was Australia’s third biggest export, contributing over $32 billion dollars a year to the national economy. With challenges of COVID-19 looming ahead for the education sector, it’s more important than ever to support educators and students with cross-cultural communication.
Teaching across cultures
The higher education sector employs nearly 130,000 Australians, and before COVID-19, a quarter of university revenue was coming from full fee-paying international students, with the figure as high as 40% at some institutions. In Victoria’s TAFE, over 30% of enrolled students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Fiona is a sought-after expert on practical side of teaching across cultures. She has provided training and consultation at 6 TAFEs, 4 secondary schools and 23 universities on everything from teaching international students and cross-cultural customer service to pronouncing multicultural names (as seen in the Melbourne Age). Her clients include the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Le Cordon Bleu cooking school and Presbyterian Ladies’ College.

Teaching and Learning
In Australia, a significant proportion of students are not only studying in a second language, they are adapting to a very different education culture. Fiona regularly runs training for educators on how to help students transition to Australian-style learning and address common challenges such as:
- Class participation
- Managing language barriers
- Engaging international students online
- Critical thinking
- Help-seeking
- Getting students to engage across cultures
- Plagiarism and collusion
Fiona also provides training for students, with a focus on:
- Common challenges for students new to study in Australia
- Australian cultural values
- Australian English
- The Australian education style
- Making connections across cultures

“I highly recommend Fiona’s training programs on teaching international students to all educators. Her practical tips are great, but what I found most valuable was what I learned about my students’ behaviour and motivations. The insights she provided have enabled me to customise my teaching approach to get the best possible performance from everyone in my multicultural classroom.”
Eu-Jin Teo, Senior Accounting Lecturer, University of Melbourne.
